Frequently asked questions

Why should I use FLEXI interdental brushes?

Conventional tooth brushing alone does not provide complete removal of food particles and bacteria that lodge in the narrow crevices between the teeth. Not everybody uses floss successfully to clean these spaces, and interdental brushes are a widely accepted alternative to flossing, recommended by dentists, hygienists and dental therapists.

Why do the FLEXI interdental brushes come in different sizes?

The range of nine different FLEXI interdental brush sizes means that your dental professional can select the right size brush for the gaps between your teeth. The gaps may vary, so you may need more than one size, or to use one of the two tapered brushes.

How do I know which size brush to order?

Your dental therapist or hygienist is the best person to recommend the sizes that you should use. You shouldn't use a brush that you have to force into the interdental space: it should move through the space comfortably. When your hygienist makes a recommendation, it will be easy for you to remember which size to buy, since FLEXI interdental brushes come with colour coded flexible handles.

Can I just use dental floss instead of interdental brushes?

For many people, FLEXI interdental brushes have become the “new dental floss”. For a long time, dentists have advocated dental floss as an adjunct to toothbrushes for cleaning teeth more thoroughly at home.

If you already use dental floss, don't stop now. However, if you find it difficult to reach spaces at the back of the mouth, then FLEXI interdental brushes may be the answer. FLEXI's bendable rubber handle, means it is easier to access these spaces.

Do FLEXI interdental brushes help improve my gum health?

Yes they do! Bacteria and food particles that lodge in the narrow crevices between the teeth lead to plaque build up and gum disease. As you clean between the teeth you are also massaging the gums, promoting better gum health, while removing the debris that causes oral health problems.

Can I use my interdental brushes more than once?

Just like any toothbrush, interdental brushes can be washed out after use, and used again. The life of an interdental brush depends on how often it is used and how well it is cleaned. Careful use and regular rinsing can extend the life of a brush considerably: as a rough guide, each brush will last 2-3 days or as long as a week. Some choose to use their brushes only once.

I have braces. Can I use FLEXI interdental brushes?

Interdental brushes are ideal for people with braces (fixed orthodontic appliances). Plaque can build up between the bracket and the gum, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. FLEXI interdental brushes allow you to access the space between the wire and the teeth, to remove food particles and prevent the build up of plaque. Decay and gum disease can develop quickly if plaque is left to accumulate.

Do you have any other products for people with braces?

Yes, we do. Our Solo single tufted brushes are ideal for cleaning along the gum margins between the wire and the gums, and the back surfaces of the back teeth. Our long handled Proxi interdental brushes are an alternative to the FLEXI brushes.

What is the difference between FLEXI and Proxi interdental brushes?

Some people, particularly people with arthritis, may find the rubber handles of the FLEXI interdental brushes difficult to hold. Our Proxi interdental brushes have a long metal handle that different size colour coded heads can fit into, for easier handling and reach to the back of the mouth.
